The turbo-fountain

چکیده
Reliable wireless broadcast with asynchronous data access based on fountain coding is investigated. We review the traditional problem formalisation for fountain codes operating on erasure channels, and we generalise the problem formalisation to more general channels. We introduce a novel type of rateless codes based on the Turbo Principle: the Turbo-Fountain. The Turbo-Fountain is able to consider soft information from the channel in the decoding process. Two realisations for the Turbo-Fountain are introduced. We show simulation results for the Turbo-Fountain realisations on the AWGN and on fading channels. Additionally, we compare the achievable Turbo-Fountain performance with traditional fountain codes designed for the erasure channel, both on the AWGN and on fading channels, considering an appropriate erasure declaration. It is shown that the Turbo-Fountain provides significant performance gains, due to exploitation of soft information, and approaches capacity. Moreover, we investigate the Turbo-Fountain within the framework of joint source-fountain coding. We show that the Turbo-Fountain provides the additional ability of lossless source compression and outperforms a system with separate source coding followed by fountain coding. Copyright # 2006 AEIT.

متن کاملDigital Fountain Codes System Model and Performance over AWGN and Rayleigh Fading Channels
Digital fountain codes were originally packet-level forward erasure codes, but researchers have found that they are good at correcting bit errors. Modern LDPC and turbo codes have been shown to approach the Shannon limit. However, they are fixed rate codes and cannot well satisfy the Internet services that may encounter variable loss rates or asynchronous data access. For both packet and bit le...
متن کاملJoint Source-Channel-Fountain Coding for Asynchronous Broadcast
A novel concept of joint source-fountain coding for asynchronous wireless broadcast is presented. The traditional field of joint source-channel coding aims in both lossless data compression as well as reliable data delivery. Besides, fountain coding allows reliable broadcast without the need of feedback, and furthermore, asynchronous data access, i.e., each receiver is able to decide when it wa...
متن کاملRateless distributed source code design
Over the past decade, rateless codes, i.e., digital fountain codes, have emerged as an efficient and robust solution for reliable data transmission over packet erasure networks and a particularly suitable one for multicasting and broadcasting applications where users may experience variable channel conditions and packet loss rates, such as mobile environments. Luby Transform (LT) and Raptor cod...
متن کاملLoss Rate Based Fountain Codes for Data Transfer
Fountain codes are becoming increasingly important for data transferring over dedicated high-speed long-distance network. However, the encoding and decoding complexity of traditional fountain codes such as LT and Raptor codes are still high. In this paper, a new fountain codes named LRF (Loss Rate Based Fountain) codes for data transfer is proposed. In order to improve the performance of encodi...
